Know what you sleep on – your mattress product passport

Knowing what you sleep on sounds obvious. In practice, it rarely is. That is why, since 2024, every Greensleep mattress comes with its own product passport: a transparent overview of materials, origin and future. Not as an extra, but as the natural next step.

Transparency starts with understanding

You do not buy a mattress for the short term. It supports your nights for years, often without a second thought. But look a little deeper, and you realise how little you may actually know about what lies beneath you. Where do the materials come from? How is it made? And what happens when it reaches the end of its life?

For us, good sleep starts not only with comfort, but with understanding. We want you to know what you sleep on, without needing technical expertise. Transparency is not a marketing layer. It is a way of taking responsibility for what we make.

In partnership with TripleR

To turn transparency into something tangible, we partnered with TripleR in 2024. This made us one of the first companies in Belgium to actively introduce product passports within the mattress sector.

TripleR was one of the first to develop a digital product passport specifically for mattresses. Their system makes it possible to collect and share information about materials, construction and lifecycle in a clear, structured way — not only for you as the user, but also for manufacturers and recycling partners.

"The sector needs clear information about what is inside a mattress, so it can be handled correctly at the end of its life. Without that knowledge, sustainability remains abstract.."

That reflects how we see our products: as something that goes far beyond the moment of purchase.

What is a product passport, and how does it work?

A product passport is, in essence, a digital record linked to your mattress. By scanning the QR code on the label, you can access that information.

When you scan the code, you will find information such as:

  • where your mattress was made
  • which materials it contains
  • how the different layers are constructed
  • how to care for it properly
  • and the options available at the end of its life

That information is not static. It forms part of a wider system in which other parties — such as repair specialists and recycling companies — can also put it to use.

Why a product passport truly changes things

Without insight into materials and construction, much of your mattress remains unknown. That has consequences, especially when it needs to be replaced. Many mattresses are still incinerated today, not because it is the best solution, but because it often seems to be the only practical option.

With a product passport, that starting point changes. Because all relevant information is available, it becomes easier to repair or replace individual parts, reuse materials, or separate them correctly for recycling. What once remained hidden can now be put to use. For you, this mainly means clarity. You know not only what you are buying, but also how to care for it and what can happen to it later. The lifespan of your mattress becomes less abstract and more tangible. You can also extend its lifespan by renewing only the parts that need replacing.

What does this mean for the future?

Today, the end of a mattress’s life is still not a perfectly organised process. There are still too few organisations able to fully dismantle mattresses and turn them back into raw materials. That is a reality the entire sector continues to face. But systems such as TripleR make that next step more tangible. By recording today which materials a mattress contains, it becomes possible tomorrow to take it apart correctly and process each material with purpose. Without that insight, valuable raw materials are often lost.

The information from the product passport is stored in an international database. When the mattress reaches a processing partner, they can use the QR code or RFID tag to see exactly how it is constructed. This allows for more targeted dismantling and reduces the risk of materials being lost. The label on the cover plays an important role in this process. Please do not remove it, so the information can remain with your mattress throughout its life.

It does not change everything overnight, but it does mean a mattress no longer reaches an anonymous end point. It remains readable, even at the end of its journey.
